Id like to think he is more of a grey side than anything, especially in Episode 4, where we meet him as a man who will do anything for a buck no matter who gets screwed over. I really liked the Solo novels because it started with a 5 year old Han (I think) on board a pirate vessel as part of the crew. It explained how he was able to learn Wookie, how he got the Corellian Blood Stripe on his pants, how he came across Jabba, even the infamous Kessel run. The last book ended with Han walking into the Cantina at Mos Eisley and Chewie telling him there are people wanting to meet him about a job.
