So, you tried to change your IP manually, using CMD, but got the infamous socket error? Here's how to repair it! (Happened to me too :/)

The error is called Winsock2, and it occurs when you get this error:
An error occurred while renewing interface ‘Internet’: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

And in Internet Explorer too, >.>:
The page cannot be displayed Additionally, you may have no IP address or no Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address, and you may be receiving IP packets but not sending them.

Well, there are 2 ways to do it:

From the XP source files, go to the Support / Tools directory

First way to do it:
Run netdiag /test:winsock

It should say winsock test passed, or something like that.

Second way

1)Run Msinfo32
2)Click on the +
3) Click on Network.
4) Click on Protocol.
There should be like 10 sections if Winsock 2 is Okay:

RSVP TCP Service Provider
MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]
RSVP UDP Service Provider
MSAFD Tcpip [UDP/IP]
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip…
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip…
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip…
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip…
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip…
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip…

If these aren't present, your Winsock2 is probably corrupt >.>.

Here's how to repair it if this happens:

1)Run Regedit
2)Delete these registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

1)Then, restart your comp...
2)Now, go to Network Connections.
3)Right click ---> Properties
4)Click install.
5)Click on Protocol.
6)Select add button.
7)Click on the have disk button.
8)Go to the \Windows\inf directory
9)Click on the Open button
10)Click on the OK button
11)Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
12)Click ok, and then restart.
