My town is surrounded by corn fields. Lots of forests with hiking, rafting, and horse back riding; a few large military bases. The entire town use to be a giant military base, but as the military became smaller (smaller / not weaker), the land and buildings that were previously used for horse cavalry and bugle boys and train stations ... stuff the military does not need anymore; all of that land and those buildings got auctioned off to the public. Most of it was bought up cheap by immigrants and lower class citizens, so as the town grew, it became very artistically and ethnically cultural. Think sprawling country sides and good old country boys of every race mixed with established urban town squares; lots of theaters and art museums, bars, breweries, clubs, parks, and sports entertainment. Weekly farmers markets and festivals. Small ethnic restaurants everywhere (more so than fast food). Lots of active night life. The entire town smells like charcoal and camp fires, because of the coal power plant. Lax law enforcement mixed with low crime rates ... they ignore the bsdsm sex clubs, drugs, and guns; even if reported, and the local judge we voted for refuses to prosecute, because that's the way we like it. We're one of a dozen close together towns that make up the largest / fastest growing non-coastal city in my country. Every other large city in my country has a body of water ... an ocean it rests against or a major river running through it, but not us. Instead, we have tons and tons of small ponds and lakes that use to be swamp land before we filled it all in. Think hills a valleys separating pieces of farm land dotted with scenic water features. The center of town has canals with boats, a popular romantic attraction for couples. If we want to go to "the beach", some of the larger lakes are surrounded by sand dunes, where we hang out and picnic and drink beer.
