This is part 1 of my BBCode series where I give an overview of the different BBCodes available to our community and how to use them. In part one I will show you how to add basic text formatting to your messages with simple text effects such as Bold, Italics, Underline and more.

These effects are created by using BBCode in your message. What is BBCode you say? Well I'm glad you asked. BBcode are special tags that can be used to add additional style and content to your message. Similar to html, BBCodes are made up of tags. They have an opening tag and a closing tag. But instead of using angle brackets
< >
, BBCodes use square brackets
[ ]
. Wrapping your text inside these tags will cause it to be transformed in different ways.

Below is a list of all the basic text formatting BBCodes along with examples on how to use then and the effect they have:

Bold

Bold text is good for emphasizing import words or phrases. I often use bold text to create headers that help break up my message into easily digestible parts. You can see an example of that here in this tutorial where I helped separate the different BBCodes we're talking about by giving each of them a bold name.

To bold text, you can use the following tags in your message:
Code
[b]EXAMPLE TEXT[/b]

In the code above replacing EXAMPLE TEXT with your own words will make them appear bold when you post your message.

Example: I am BOLD text

Italic
To make text appear in italics you can use the following tags in your message:
Code
[i]EXAMPLE TEXT[/i]

In the code above replacing EXAMPLE TEXT with your own words will make them appear in italics when you post your message.

Example: This text is ITALICIZED

Underline
To add an underline effect to words you can use the following tags in your message:
Code
[u]EXAMPLE TEXT[/u]

In the code above replacing EXAMPLE TEXT with your own words will give them an underline when you post your message.

Example: This text is UNDERLINED

Strikethrough
A strikethrough is typically used to emphasize text that is no longer relevant or a link that no longer works.

To add a strikethrough effect to words you can use the following tags in your message:
Code
[s]EXAMPLE TEXT[/s]

In the code above replacing EXAMPLE TEXT with your own words will put a horizontal line through the middle of them when you post your message.

Example: This text has been crossed out

See part 2 of my BBCode series Introduction to BBCode - Advanced Text Formatting where I will teach you to do more advanced stuff like adding color and highlights to your text.

Image This is great. I do love using the BBcodes to customize posts. Thank you
@DataMine
for the explanation. I like that I can use BBcode for adding images and mostly making my text colors pink. If I sold stuff in market, I would find this even more useful for creating custom ads that are appealing to prospective buyers. With so many talented vendors here, I think it's important to stand out.

This is actually very useful, especially for new members like me. As I don't have much background with BBCodes, and I'm fairly new to the site, this will be able to help me customize my posts, especially if I want to emphasize something, or just make my posts look cute :awesome25: , without having to guess how other members are able to do this and that to their posts. Thanks for this! :katheart1:
