Hello 
When you create a .gif, you need to think of a flip book. create different layers, each one is either the next action or the next image you want to use.
Begin by opening gimp. I drew an anime dolly and then used the layers toolbar to create a new layer on top of that... I cheated a bit because I created a duplicate layer, erased the eyes and then drew in open ones on top. You can edit the existing layer as a duplicate, I find this easier, or you can simply draw it all over. I use small size layers because they're my emoji dollies. You can use any layer size u want depending on what you're looking to do with it.
After you have all of your layers, like so...
You simply hit File, Export As, and change the file type to .gif. I noticed that when you name a file, if it says filename.jpg instead of .gif, it will save as .jpg even if you selected file type .gif.
After you set the name and continue, you will need to select Animate on the next menu. there's a timer, you need to play around with it until you get the correct animation. Higher numbers slow it down between layers and lower speed it up. Because this is very basic, you use the same speed between layers. If you want one to last longer than another, I suggest adding duplicate slides. Example, if you have slides A-C and they are all set to 100 but you need slide B to play longer, simply add 3 slides of B next to each other and all together u now have slide B at 300.
