If you don't want a specific person to know your outfits, then:
1) don't go into rooms / chats with that person.
2) don't save your outfits on IMVU (instead, save them locally on your computer)
3) make your default outfit something you don't care about
None of IMVU's built-in hide item / outfit functions work. That data leaks out all over the place. Otherwise, how would the computers / devices of those whom you are chatting with know what you put on your avatar on their screens?

u can buy vip on find.vu and it'll hide ur outfits

That only hides them on find.vu though, there are half a dozen sites out there other than find.vu with applications for viewing hidden outfits and products in scene. That includes our own site.

As the Don said there is many sites even private sites that offer the hidden system and more features. You are only hidden on that one site while the others you are visible.
A way I avoid my outfit getting scanned is having a noob avatar as my default avatar, making my outfits private and turning off the save outfit feature in which every time you purchase an item in shop it saves as an outfit.
I'm not the type to usually jump from room to room in public however, if you are the type who likes going from room to room it's best to have an avatar you could care less about getting scanned.
