If you're playing on a PC (highly recommended IMO), the here's some advice, works for me but maybe not for you. If you're on mobile most if this won't apply.

Flit around thru rooms, and if they seem OK (not full of people you don't find pleasing, or else not attracting enough new people, which will be most) park for a bit. When new people come in, greet them by name, talk to them one-to-one (even tho other people in the room are talking, ignore them for the moment). Scan the person's profile ASAP and see if there's anything in common or that you can ask them about. Compliment them on their look.

If you can get a convo going for a bit and they seem nice invite them for a one-on-one (convo only!) in your room. If you're shy or awkward be out front and say so. It's a game and you're anon so maybe you can unwind a little more than in real life. Don't forget to friend them if you seem compatible.

If you've got the credits, change your room an interesting room, or cozy, or like a club, or a house, or beach resort, whatever is pleasing to you. The default room is cold and uninviting IMO, and kind of advertises that you don't care enough to get something nice. More important than avatars and clothes IMO. If you value shop you can get a decent room pretty cheap. If you spin every day you'll soon have enough credits for an inexpensive room. Spin is done by going to the website (imvu.com) in your browser.

You can take another person shopping, for free -- got to shop and then click on invite another person. You can also chat while shopping. It only mostly works if you invite girls tho, altho YMMD. Having one tab when you and your friend are in a public room, and one where you just your friend and you are in your room, lets you talk about what's going on in the other room, which is fun and bonding. IMO.

If this works for a few times, maybe you'll get a small group of people around you. Invite two people come to your room at once and hope they like each other.

There's roleplaying of demons and elves and whatnot, if you care for that. Also, I think, of other stuff -- once I hung for a bit with this group of an 18th century port city, pirates and all, which was great. Other stuff like that.

I never meet people in clubs that I become friends with, they're too busy and a waste. For me. But I'm not a pickup artist.

If you can get someone to make you a mod in a public room, that's great. You can be in the room and be a host and keep the room chill by kicking out jerks (there are a lot of jerks). Welcome everyone who comes in if you can. Each room shows its owner in the thumbnail, the person who can make mods. DM them and tell them you want to help keep the room chill and can you please be a mod. Works rarely but all you need is one positive response.

Good luck!
