I was really not sure if I should've posted in IMVU related or Off-topic.
But I guess some of you probably noticed that everyone on IMVU's profile card orientation is ''Prefer not to say'' and that for a while.
So I really thought it was a bug so I contacted IMVU support and I got shocked by the answer, to be honest.

So I wanted to know what you guys think about it should it be removed or not?

I have mixed feelings about this.

As a web developer who often has to design pages around data I don't care about or is hardly used, I can understand wanting to remove something that isn't used much. It can make a page look nicer or make it easier to continue developing/maintaining the code behind the scenes. Often times the smallest thing can cause a lot of trouble behind the scenes.

Take Yahoo, AIM and Jabber features on our site for example. Those services are really outdated and some don't exist anymore. It doesn't make sense to still offer people the option to fill out their usernames. Unfortunately, removing them entirely is no small task. They are built into the core part of the site's code so removing them not only would take a few days but also might break something.

On the other hand, we offer the same feature they are removing here and I would never consider removing it. Sure, it may not get used much but it's such a simple feature that is hardly difficult to maintain that it's worth having just for the small percentage who do use it.

So personally, I don't see a reason for IMVU to remove it and I find it hard to believe that it was largely ignored.

Indeed It is hard to believe that out of millions of users only a few would use it.
But for me, It is their game I guess they can do what they want with it. If they thought it would be the best for them.
But honestly, If I was them I would've asked the community opinion first.

Yes, it's their "game" but their entire business is built around a community. Doing what they want with little regard to the community is not right nor smart for business.

Personally, I can't stand when things are taken away from me and I'm drip fed little things here and there. I can't imagine using IMVU if you only had like 5 settings, 1 room and 1 outfit and not much freedom. That sounds extremely dull and depressing.

Sure, that's an extreme scenario but it helps get my point across.

Oh so that is why when I keep trying to change the orientation back to straight, it will keep on switching to "prefer not to say". Here I was thinking it was a glitch or someone h4c|<7d me. Lol. Thanks for this thread I got informed! Hehe. Don't have to worry about me being h4c|<7d now. LOL.

Thanks
@UnKn0wn
for sharing this tidbit. I had been wondering why my orientation had changed without my doing. Perhaps an attempt of neutrality movement?

I am not sure where i stand on the removal of sexual orientation. My opinion lies in that this NOT a feature the general public has been requesting. VU spends their efforts in things that are out of touch with their users. Can't remember the last time where they actually took their users opinion and actually provided what the masses ask for. So for them to make this change without knowledge or input is no surprise. Wonder if they will replace it?

Wait...i take that back. They actually implemented the DND to hide online status! That was the last they appeased the users.

I mean I wouldn't really care as much because it never really bothered me.

As IMVU States
Recently, users' Orientation settings have been set to Prefer Not to Say with no option to change. As most users have opted never to change this setting upon creating their accounts, we have decided to remove it altogether.

The recent change is in preparation for the subsequent removal of Orientation settings on all platforms, which should happen in the next couple of weeks. We thank you for your patience as we go through the transition.

This is not just a localize thing with IMVU as it states above " removal of Orientation settings on all Platforms"

I believe in taking this away limits the so called segregation and that of those that are against anything that is not the "Norm". A lot of people shy away from others because of their sexual preferences this is a known fact. So doing away with the Identifier will take away a lot of the hating on social platforms. Yes it is taking away your right to announce your preference so that others may locate you and make it easier but then as mentioned it does make those that are straight and not open minded nervous. So in order for IMVU to CYA it is taking away the preferences so that no one may file a lawsuit against them.

Look at it this way: When you go fill out a application for a job Does it ask you your sexual preference? No because this is considered discriminatory. So this is what all Platforms are doing as it is seen as discriminatory again preventing lawsuits based on such.

Except IMVU is a social community where people from all of the world mingle. What's the point if everyone is the same? If someone is really bothered by my sexual preference then that is there problem and frankly I wouldn't want them around me anyway.

IMVU can't be held liable because one person doesn't want to talk another based on their orientation, that's a load of crap.

I could care less about a persons sexual preference as that does not make a person who they are but there are those out there that will find any way to make a Stink. It is a cruel world and everyone is so damn money hungry they will look for any reason to make a quick buck.
