Deep Client Updates?

Noticed there's a new IMVU client update (haven't installed it yet, but things tend to get a little weird the longer you go without updating so I will at some point):

1. Is it safe to update the VU client with the Deep Client installed? (and through the DC launcher?)
2. Do you need to re-install the DC if you update the VU client?

Apologies if these are no-brainer questions, I just prefer to be safer than sorry. Did have a little look through older forum posts, but didn't come across the answer.

I'm working on an update for the clients as we speak.

You can have multiple clients installed no problem.

If you're Deep Client is installed in the vanilla location then install the vanilla client or updating will delete the Deep Client and replace it with the vanilla one.

Appreciate it! I have DC installed in the same directory (just assumed it had to be). I'm guessing the Deep Client version has to match the vanilla client version? (i.e. DC version v1.6.6 will only work with IMVU version v1.6.6, for example. - DC v1.6.6 won't work with IMVU v1.6.7 or v1.7.0.)

It can be in the same directory (appdata), it just can't be installed in AppData/IMVUClient where the vanilla client gets installed to. Unfortunately the vanilla client doesn't let you customize the install path during installation.

The version doesn't matter, if you want to install the vanilla client along side it you can use any version that IMVU still lets you use.

Ohhh shit, really? Um, that's exactly where I have the Deep Client installed and where the DC installer defaulted to. I didn't think to change it since I figured it might have to be in the same folder as the vanilla client and all it's files.

Eeeek. Guess it's time to update the vanilla client and re-install the DC in a separate folder if updating will revert it anyway. Haven't run the vanilla client since and the DC has worked perfectly as far as I could tell, so hopefully nothing's flagged.

Yeah, anything installed in the %appdata%\IMVUClient folder gets wiped when you install vanilla IMVU as that's where it installs to and they don't let you change that. Our installers let you pick where to install to though. So you can install our clients at any time and put them wherever you want. Though I recommend keeping them in %appdata%. I typically have all clients installed at the time in %appdata%\IMVUClient-Lite, %appdata%\IMVUClient-T3, %appdata%\IMVUClient-Deep, etc

OHHH ok, I get you now. I thought you meant having it in the /IMVUClient folder was bad news bears due to being detected or something - my bad. (Hence my "oh oh.." moment.) Then again, I know one of the DC features is disabling their spyware so even if they did, nada. I appreciate all the info by the way, I enjoy knowing how stuffs works and such.

Noticed on the vanilla client changelog that two of the new updates/changes are specifically for detection security and such. They're trying...

Yeah, you can name them whatever you want I just stick with convention for convenience. Both T3DE and the Deep client are built off IMVULite so they inherit all of the features of Lite such as the spyware and ad removal then get a few extra things or some tweaks.

It's always a cat and mouse game with IMVU, in fact they just released an update today.

Dropping it here rather than creating a new topic - Had some odd occurrences with the V12 and V13 versions of the Deep Client respectively:

1. Tried to launch V12 client through it's desktop shortcut like always (since I hadn't updated to the latest IMVU version yet). Freezes on 2% load before crashing with a stopped responding error. (The square IMVU logo popup before the login box.) Proceeds to soft-lock the entire IMVU or DC .exe.
1.1. Trying to launch the IMVU client either through the DC shortcut or the original/vanilla IMVU shortcut will technically launch the .exe but it won't actually load or do anything (appears in both taskbar and taskmanager, but doesn't actually load or proceed).
1.2. Required system restart for the IMVU/DC .exe to work again.

2. Issue persisted after updating to V13 (but not updating IMVU, as far as I can tell - figured V12 was no longer functional).
2.2. Managed to fully launch the Deep Client by opening the location folder and starting the .exe there, instead of using the shortcut generated during installation.

Putting this down as a just incase. Only issue I've ever had with the Deep Client and nothing's changed as far as I'm aware. Could be a case of broken shortcuts ..but again, nothing's changed with the V12 version, so I'm not sure. (Unless V12 stopped working when V13 was released? I know it's tied to the Mafias servers, but assumed only while the .exe is running - just like the vanilla client.)

Another weird finding is the prompt to update IMVU stopped appearing after successfully installing V13 onto the previous version of IMVU. Not sure if that's because V13 included the update files or what. Sorry if this is a little all over the place, I'm still learning exactly how the Deep Client works and such, how it interacts with updates, etc. V13 also flagged my AV, but just a false-positive due to being a very new file - to be expected.

That is very strange and definitely should not be happening., do you still have the shortcut on your desktop? I'm curious what the target is. If you installed v13 in the same place as v12, then the shortcut should work just fine.

Yeah, that's normal. At the time, v13 was built off the most recent update, a new one didn't come out till the next day (go figure) but IMVU doesn't always show the dialog for minor updates so I don't think you'll see it even today.

Yeah, unfortunately that's also normal.

Aside from the documented features we add/remove, our clients work basically the same as Vanilla. There's a few behind the scenes technical things that differ but those are pretty much inconsequential and will never be noticed by most users. So for the most part everything you already understand about the vanilla client is true for ours as well.
