Most likely it's because you have a google or other website toolbar. The adds you see could be from those.
For example, all the IMVU advertisements I see have a small "Ads by Google" by them.

If we get enoough members to join our free VIP group, then we will be able to afford to remove those ads.

Actually I have the IMVU mafia toolbar. Which every 10 seconds I get a message saying "This is a test"
